Only We Can Improve Our Communities

raise-up-Chicago-prison

好…50 年前, we couldn’t imagine the day when a black man would become President of the United States. Then out of nowhere came Barack Obama–half white, half black, but black enough. When he became President, Blacks were elated and filled with super optimism. I remember receiving messages from people believing that racists would run for the hills and the black communities would finally prosper. Everyone believed the change had finally come. But now, eight years later, as our Great Black Hope is leaving the White House, reality is starting to sink in. 8 years of a black president, and we ain’t got shit to show for it.

為 8 歲月, blacks have been hanging on to the hope that our schools would see improvement, our unemployment rate would decrease, our wealth would improve, the criminal justice system would treat us better, and our loved ones sentenced to decades for nonviolent crimes would come home. But here we are, at the end of the 8 歲月, and none of our hopes have come to fruition.

Most of our lack of progress can be blamed on ourselves. We foolishly looked to others to solve our problems instead of making individual and collective effort to change our conditions. 希望, the disappointment Obama leaves behind will allow us to finally realize that only we can improve our communities and conditions. So instead of being stagnated by the things our Great Black Hope didn’t give us, let’s appreciate and take advantage of the two things he did give us: a reality check and the hope that we too can become President.
