  • Here, my life behind bars offers understanding for those of you who venture into ‘the life’ with no understanding of its consequences: the adversity, the obstacles and the journey one must travel alone when the gavel is slammed, your cell is locked and the lights go out.

This Can’t Be Life

It seems just yesterday I had the joys of freedom and the pleasures of unrestrained physical motion. This day I’m pigeon-holed in one of the dark and murky coffin-like cells that hold hostage millions of men and women who aspired to be but instead found themselves dreading the realities of reality. This can’t be life.

The passing hours from that day to this one has brought about a change so drastic that at times I find it nearly impossible to breathe. What’s suffocating is the life I allowed to slip through my fingers, instead grabbing at everything which held hands with death. Just yesterday, I removed Tewhan and replaced that existence with bloodshed, barbed-wire and cold as ice prison bars. Just yesterday, I was a tender child with no worries or no cares. Fun time was street football games, kickball and PlayStations.

When your yesterday is today you can’t even begin to form ideas of tomorrow without unearthing psychological and natural disaster. I have an unforgiving appreciation for those days, both the good and the bad. But my present remains unpleasing. My future shall be eye-filling and appealing, all because I have made the conscious decision to remember yesterday.
