The Evolution of Overseer to Police Officer

Circa 1616: ”Y’all black beast simma down therr in dat bow foe I come yonder and whip ya!”

Circa 1716: ”Y’all niggers betta stop all dat mumbo jumbo and pick deem therr cotton foe ya gat a good ole whippin, ya herr?!”

Circa 1816: ”Hey nigger I ain’t tell ya to stop workin, get ya black arse ta work!”

Circa 1916: ”Where y’all uppity niggers headin?! Y’all on the wrong side of town, ya herrr me?!”

Circa 2016: ”Hey you with the hoodie on stop right there. Getcha hands out of your pockets and place ’em on top of the hood and spread ’em. Where you heading this late?!”

These kind of statements represent a snapshot of the ongoing brutal history between people of African descent and the slave-master’s minion – the Overseer – who now parlays as police officer.
For those who demand clarity, check out some of the similarities between the two.

The Overseer was employed to patrol the plantation on horseback while terrorizing its inhabitants by whipping, kubaka, and even killing at will with total impunity.
The officer patrols the ‘hood aka the plantation in a vehicle with a firearm abusing his power with the same impunity.

The Overseer used bloodhounds to track us down.
The officer uses German Shepherds to track us and attack us.

One thing that has not changed between the overseer and his contemporary, the police officer, is the lack of respect shown to people of African descent and the centuries of animus against their women. The rape of these women by the European slave-masters, overseers, and the police is well documented and has long been used as a tool of subjugation based on sexual depravity. Look no further than the recent case out of Oklahoma that was purposely downplayed by the mainstream media involving the sexual assault of thirteen women of African descent by police officer Daniel Holtzclaw. The victims of this officer’s fetishizing of blackness ranged in age from 17-60 umri wa miaka. Some of them were poor, some even had criminal records, so many of them felt they were being marginalized and subjected to value judgment because they had never been and would never be afforded the same privilege and consideration that a European women would. Clearly these women were brutalized by this officer in the same manner which the Overseer used for centuries.

Hivi karibuni, we have seen the oppressed become conscious of and fed up with the police officer’s Overseer tactics in their communities. Many have decided to rebel not just against the oppressive officer, but against their own community in a very negative and destructive way. Swiftly, and without hesitation, we witnessed a counter-uprising and surge in violence on behalf of the oppressor against oppressed communities to reassert their Overseer power; a power once again restored and mightier than before.

It’s easy to see that the once mighty Overseer’s horse, whips, ropes, and hoses are no match for the police officer’s militarized armored vehicles, tasers, tear gas, stun grenades, night sticks, firearms, and new wave psychological warfare.

We must become much more conscious of the shrouded harsh realities that we have faced for over 400 years and continue to face today. We will continue to be subject to such brutality and oppression for 400 more years, if we do not strive to come up with REAL actionable solutions. Hadi wakati huo, it will be business as usual and the atrocities committed against people of African descent in the United States of America WILL continue to be relegated as marginal and inconsequential until we are completely vanquished and BLACK LIVES TRULY DO NOT MATTER!
