Open Letter to My Little Queen

Dear Sadesia,

When the clock strikes exactly 3:34 a.m. on November 3rd you’ll be approximately 567,651,000 seconds old!

Cha kusikitisha, for the majority of those seconds I’ve been an absentee so-called father to you. I was too preoccupied with chasing a lifestyle of destruction. I was constantly in and out of prison because I was not mature enough to stop chasing that lifestyle; a lifestyle that would eventually force me to watch you grow into the beautiful young woman you have become from behind these cold steel bars.

Who’s to blame for all of this? NO ONE BUT MYSELF!

In the not so distant past I would not hesitate to cast blame on other people for my misfortune and shortcomings, but as I matured I quickly realized that MY actions were the catalyst that gave those same people the power to capitalize off of my uncivilized ways. You should never want to emulate the uncivilized ways I once possessed because the consequences are extremely severe.

We are all prone to making bad decisions in our lifetime, just as you did last year in October. You have now reached a stage in your life where every decision you make, whether good or bad, will affect your life. I truly hope that your decision making has improved since last October.

Sadesia, you and I possess so many of the same attributes. You are a true extension of me and a split image of me also; so much so that every time I look in the mirror it’s as if you are staring back at me. I sometimes start to wonder if you are being taught righteously and loved righteously three time zones away from me. Then I really start to wonder what your life would have been like if I would have not disregarded my responsibilities and continued to live a negative lifestyle.

If a person is not aware of their own faults, they will never have a sense of personal identity and strive to do better.

It’s sad to say that not many fathers here in prison have these thoughts of their children. They are still immersed in a negative lifestyle and preoccupied with maintaining an image. To them being in prison is a badge of honor, an honor that’s more honorable than striving to become a responsible father.

Sadesia, I want you to know that I am NOT one of those fathers. I yearn to be the father that you deserved since your birth. It angers me to see that you have suffered from my past mistakes. That anger comes from frustrated expectations and pride. I learned to only look back at how far I’ve come because if I am constantly retracing and reacting to my past, I will NEVER get to see our future together.

Before I end this open letter to you I want to digitally etch some words of wisdom to you for your born day.

I want you to ALWAYS remember that people are going to judge you, but you do not have to be how someone judges you. You can be somebody completely different. You must not accept the roles that society foists upon you. Be the master of your own image and legacy rather than letting others define it for you. NEVER compromise your body and the way you desire to be loved. ALWAYS require and demand supreme love. NEVER forget to wear your crown with pride and forever embrace who you are and what you are, A QUEEN!
