Ni Sanaa ya Vita

Recall! Recall! Everybody back to their housing units!

Ni 7:30 a.m. I’m in education watching a DVD on Alexander The Great, trying to do something constructive. Mimi kwa kweli alitaka kuona kama video yake atakubali kwamba yeye aliiba maarifa na hekima ya kale katika Misri. Now they want to call recall. I know it’s some bullshit because this is not regular procedure. Work call is at 8:00 a.m., so why call recall? I hurry up back to the unit.

Immediately I start to think about the belongings I have that I don’t want discovered if they do a surprise raid. Kwanza, I pull my brothers up and tell them to put up any belongings they have just in case they choose to raid. Remind you they don’t move like this and the best element is surprise. Ni sanaa ya vita. So if you get caught slippin’, huwezi kuwa jambo lolote kushoto. Baadhi ya vitu hivi ni mali rahisi, extra blankets, sheets, brooms, cleaning supplies, and other accessories that will make you feel more comfortable.

But it’s the Bureau of Prisons’ (Bop) kazi ya kufanya wewe kama wasiwasi iwezekanavyo. They want you to be in a cold ass cell, eat poor food and be miserable. Wanahitaji tuwe na hasira na wale wasiokuwa na elimu ili tuweze kurudi. It’s one of the reasons they put you on supervised release. They make it where as though you are prone, or even want, kukiuka kutokana na hali wao kuomba juu ya kutolewa yako, wakati wanatakiwa kuwa huru.

Anyway, I put up my TV remotes and some other things, so I’m set and on point. I have people in different rooms looking out the window to notify the unit if they see anyone coming. Sure enough, about thirty officers were coming down the walk on their way toward our housing unit. Nimekuwa wamefungwa kwa wakati hivyo kuna tu michakato mingi watu hawa wana. Everybody begins to scramble at the last minute. I guess they got too comfortable and didn’t want to believe we were due for a shake down.

They start to take us out the unit one by one. After a vicious pat down in search of shanks or anything else that’s illegal, you see who has the ability to outsmart the officers who only need a GED to work here but feel as though you ain’t shit. Only one person gets knocked off and sent to the SHU (Maalum Makazi Unit) for 23 na 1 lockdown. I guess he wasn’t one of the smart ones lol…

They had about 150 of us outside standing outside in the cold, while it was snowing, for about three hours before they called us back to the unit. When we finally did reach the unit, as expected, our rooms had been turned upside down. Made beds were undone and thrown around. Mail was on the floor along with books and whatever else. Pictures were spread around the room. It’s hard to identify what’s missing at the moment. I know for a fact that they took my pillow, for what reason I can’t tell you.

12.08 p.m CO (Corrections Officer) yells: Chow!

It’s time for chow right now, lakini mengi ya watu ni hata kuwapiga kwenda kwa chakula cha mchana. We try to straighten our rooms back up. I guess you can say we try to re-establish that little bit of comfort we managed to establish before the shakedown. Baadhi yetu utakuwa na polepole kazi ili kupata baadhi ya vyombo vyetu waliopotea. Some of us will start stressing because they are tired of going through it, and some of us will just say f*ck it and accept what it is.

12:13 p.m Cease all inmate movement! Compound is now closed!

Damn, something happened! Everybody on the unit runs to the windows to see who was fighting or got stabbed. Everybody want to make sure their peoples are safe. It’s state versus state, gang versus gang, state versus gang, or race versus race in the federal system. Things can get real ugly, real fast. It’s a must you always be on point. Looking out the windows, you see many police running up the hill to two building. We enjoy to see the female COs running up the hill though lol. About five minutes later they bring a Mexican down with a lot of blood on his face and shirt. I know he had to have been stabbed up a couple of times. They bring another one out with a smile on his face. We assume he was the one who put in the work. Hopefully, we don’t get locked down over this. My daughter’s birthday is tomorrow. I have to call her. Then we see two more Mexicans being escorted down the hill with more blood on them.

12:21 p.m CO yells: Lockdown

This is some bullshit! I guess the day is over. I don’t know when the next time we are going to come out. I know they have to do an investigation. I didn’t have time to do anything today. I guess I’ll just read and do some writing. Hopefully I come out tomorrow and can call my daughter. Times like this you need a phone. I’m already missing out on her life. She expects me to at least call her. If I don’t speak to her, it’s going to be a problem. But I’d be wrong to take my anger out on somebody else, so I will just play it out and control myself. A person who can’t control his emotions is weak. I have to accept the fact that it was my choices that led me to prison, and I have to live with this reality. It is a constant reminder.

It always seems like these people make things worse around the holidays, for some reason. Ni inaweza kuwa mgongano wa mawazo yetu wenyewe. Two views of life collide, the strongest will win. Sad but true. Anyway, let me get into these law books. I hope everyone has a good new year.

If anyone wants advice on what to do to help your child from making the same mistakes I and other prisoner have made, you can reach me by mail:
