Dear Mama

Dear Mama,

As I’ve traveled this earth and experienced life as a man, I’ve taken notice to the fact many attribute being a man to their father figure. Thus I know today that with all my father’s strength, courage and guidance I would not be the man I am without your love. I’ve strived for excellence and made repeated mistakes along the way. And although I’ve been condemned by the many, you dare to love me in the face of all their grimacing stares and awful opinions. As a child when I fell, and my father told me to “get up, and dust myself off,” it was you who snuck me into the bathroom to band-aid my bruises, and offer me a smile as I refused to cry. And though so much time has lapsed I still see the way you care for me and my brother. You journey through these trying times as if it was you who was sentenced to this stretch. Homeboy after homeboy, komrade after komrade have faded one by one, including the many females who deceive themselves with “I love you Mass” on Facebook and Instagram. This was never you! You never abandoned me no matter where the road led or how difficult the feat. Though you rest there and I here, I can feel your warming embrace, your belief in me as the doubters pray on my downfall. Kumbuka, our last visit? The one we shared through Plexiglas. The look in your eyes, pleading with me to be safe though you spoke not of the dangers I face. You have never been a fool, and you have never pretended to be blind to the facts. You’ve never agreed with all the choices I’ve made, yet you never stopped loving me. You remained supportive even when my choices proved wrong. That’s not just a mother. That’s a Queen. It’s funny how we take this one day out of the year to acknowledge the many amazing deeds done by mothers, when in fact it is everyday that a mother should be honored. Not only do I honor your existence, I cherish your being.

Dear mama, dear mothers, I wish this day to be happy for you all. Not just my biological mother, but all the women whom have made this very earth the one that it is. For I know that I come from you all. Your loving nature nurtures and eases the strains of everyday life that we men face. I know some of you beautiful mothers cry in the silence of the night and worry endlessly about us, your sons. You put up with our bad attitudes, our ripping and running, and even at times our outright disrespectful behavior. And behind your cussing us out, I know that we are still YOUR pain in the ass. And the fact that we are YOURS means more than you can ever know.

To all mothers, and women in general, we men love you all! For you are the reason we are!!!
