We Shall Overcome

In the early 1500s the Portuguese arrived to West Africa and tricked a tribe of locals to capture, exchange and sell members of other tribes. The captured were then shackled, chained and stacked on top of each other like cargo and transported across the Atlantic Ocean to the new world to be slaves. For centuries these people, the Negroes, were enslaved and forced to work the land and produce more slaves. In the process slaves were beaten, violată, sold, and separated from their families, and later lynched, and forced to endure many other inhumane acts. Some slaves still had the courage to defy their masters, hence Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner and Frederick Douglass. Some formed and joined abolitionist groups and risked their lives for not only their personal freedom, but for the freedom of all slaves. But the troubles for African-Americans did not end with freedom. Then came the Jim Crow laws. In spite of Jim Crow laws and many other injustices, some freed slaves still prospered. There were successful communities and thriving business like Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, started by freed slaves, and even millionaires and politicians. Then came the Civil Rights Movement and widespread activism to end segregation and secure our human rights just to do simple things such as vote, eat in all restaurants, and attend certain schools to get a better education. Through the courage of the likes of The Freedom Riders, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X and many others, and their courageous acts, African Americans gained more opportunity in America but still today face unprecedented challenges.

I took us on this journey down memory lane to remind and motivate the youth to never give up the fight. With all we’re up against, with all the violence in our communities, and with poverty at an all-time high, with our brothers and sisters overcrowding prisons, and the police and other vigilantes gunning down our people in cold blood, we need to look to the past as an example and for inspiration and proof that we shall overcome.

We shall overcome, only if we fight for and be the change we want and need.
