Pictures of a Prison Yard

Kodak snaps of hundreds of those America considers worst. Cattled inside of steel cages topped with barbed wire, overlooked by gun towers and an air of despair. Khaki-colored tops and bottoms, grey cotton sweatsuits, knitted skull caps, and concealed pieces of iron, carefully carved into the likeness of Ginsus.

Mean mugs. Some real. Most fake, looks of paranoia.

Prison professors. Paralegals. Hustlers.

Visions of freedom, concentrated views of forever behind bars.

Everything being sold from protection to paper pussy.

Clicks in controlled corners. Proceed with caution!

Death only one mistake away.

Prison politics pushes past playas into protective custody.

Every one overly observant.

Nobody wants the 15-minute scheduled chapel service to be their final farewell.

No weight piles inside the federal pen. Instead, men, mainly in groups, do thousands of push ups, pull ups, burpees, and list of other exercises. It won’t be long before the alarm sounds and somebody is placed in the infirmary- victim!

Outside poker tables, dice games, chess matches . . .Welcome to Vegas!

Nobody trades dollars. We exchange stamps. Our currency is the exact thing you place on your mail.

Pay phones, community showers, computers, segregated TV sets. All heavily surveilled by the eye in the sky.

Full-court basketball games. Some of the best. Full-scholarships to the pen. Now they imitate Jordan, Lebron, Durant on the concrete of a prison yard.

Homosexuals . . . Hood tough guys, sneak peaks inside the pants of men.

A crying shame!

Tattoo’d tears, lost souls, hooch handlers (prison-made winemakers), certified chefs. Hot meals made in hot water with wire, nail clippers and electricity. We call them stingers. Microwaves a fading commodity. Lockdowns bring brown bags filled with balogna, cheese, celery, and a single piece of fruit.

The S.H.U. Isolation. 23 and 1. Caged areas fitted with those who have been locked up, while in jail.

It’s the same all over the world.

You call it prison.

We call it home!

What a pretty picture.
