Leaders Against Bullying

Bullying is a trending topic, which has put the spotlight on kids with their chest out and, most of all, those kids who are being bullied. Bullying is a scare tactic that has proven deadly. Although documented as suicides, I choose the word deadly, or maybe deaths or murders because when it comes to children, they’re vulnerable. Some children are not as strong minded as others, so when one is forced over “the edge”and can no longer endure the torture, oftentimes pleas for help fall on deaf ears. Not to mention there are children reporting these acts long before the real tragedy occurs. And what about the individuals who receive these reports or witness the bullying, but do nothing? Are they unconsciously condoning it?

I clearly respect and understand the “Era” we live in today. For me, growing up in the streets things were different. I was also bullied and picked on. My parents couldn’t afford to feed four children and provide us with “nice” clothes. There were many days when our clothes weren’t clean. Being the only boy, I’m unsure how my sisters dealt with this, but I was an easy target. There was a time during my freshman year in high school when I wore the same pair of jeans for weeks, hand washing them occasionally. It didn’t take long before my peers caught on, spotting the ink spot near my left pocket from the busted pen. I’ve been chased home, jumped and sometimes for no reason at all. This went on until I finally stood up. I was done taking the long way home. I say this to say, I dealt with the bullying and teasing the only way that I was taught. Telling my parents that I was being chased home would have only led to physical discipline. These bullies, who I like to call “attention seekers”, are driven by tormenting others. But, on the same token, I’m sure there are some things they hate about themselves. Bullies are controlling and they prey on weakness. They may feel “unpopular” and hungry for the spotlight. With bullies, most often, there’s a lack of guidance. It starts at home. What’s going on in the household of these “attention seekers”? Usually abuse. Bottom line is, our children pay little or no attention to what they hear, and only understand what they see.

Final word

To our victims:

If or when you’re being harassed by a bully, make sure that you let someone know. If they don’t believe you, keep pressing until someone does. We are not teased because something is wrong with us. We’re smart, talented etc. Bullies choose us because we have something they don’t. As of today, you are no longer victims. Stay strong and focused.

To those of you who witness bullying, but do nothing:

You’re just as bad as the bullies. If you’re against this, when and what will you stand up for?

Last but not least…to our “attention seekers”

When does it stop? You’re ruining lives. Instead of pushing your peers over the edge, you should use that energy towards something positive. Don’t think that because someone is scared of you, they respect you.

Respect and Fear are one in the same.

Raise up!
