Stand Up Against Racism

어제, 9월 30, was my birthday. And what was my gift other than another gray hair? Nothing but racial harassment and one more reason to stand up against racism and injustice.

Here’s what happened:
At approximately 7:48 a.m. I was leaving the chow hall with a pair of gloves in my back pocket. As I walked by a group of white staff members (99% of the staff here at U.S.P. Canaan is white), one of them, who happened to be an Assistant Warden, yelled out: “Hey guy!” (나는 생각한다 “Hey guy” is a euphemism for “Hey nigger!”) Since my name isn’t Guy, I continued walking. 갑자기, one of them pursued me while the Assistant Warden continued yelling, “Hey guy!” Then another Assistant Warden (yes there are two) who happened to know my name joined in and yelled: “Adams!” I stopped, and the first Assistant Warden, seeking a confrontation, ordered me to give him my gloves. To his surprise, I complied without comment, so he sarcastically stated, “Bye. Have a good day.”

This might seem like a harmless incident. 그러나, considering FBOP [Federal Bureau of Prison] policy and the history of this particular Assistant Warden, this incident is far from harmless. There is no rule or policy stating that inmates can’t have gloves in their pocket, but this Assistant Warden has repeatedly harassed–and even assaulted–African American inmates for having gloves in their pocket. Mind you, just about every white prisoner wears gloves in their back pocket also, yet he has never harassed them. It’s sort of like the South in the 1950s during the Jim Crow laws: Some groups can, and some can’t.

What troubles me most about this incident is the thought that this is just the tip of the harassment. Any man (especially one with the authority of an Assistant Warden) who is willing to stoop so low and exhibit his bias over a pair of gloves is certainly willing and able to cause much more harm than confiscating a prisoner’s property. Only time will tell what else he has in store for me–maybe a trip to solitary confinement, unwarranted corporal punishment, who knows.

One thing that I do know is that this incident has made me more determined to stand up and fight. I dread seeing the youth having to experience such systemic racism and modern day slavery. So I am willing to sacrifice my life and anything else to put an end to such wickedness.
