Man Up

man-up-prison-gangs

For years I lived a “get with the program” kind of life. In other words I was the wrong kind of follower, a boy even, living in his only way. For years I remained stagnant, without a purpose. I was using the cancers of society in attempt to find my way. At a young age I turned to gangs in search of family when all along I had one at home. Through the violence, trips to youth centers and losing close friends and loved ones, I decided to man up!

Through experience one can become wiser or, even worse, one can learn and remain a part of the problem. After everything that I have been through, the only thing that makes sense to me is to man up! I’m not talking about going out on the yard every time there is a conflict and standing on the frontline. To man up is to keep the heat down. We as men must practice diplomacy, be examples of respect and carry ourselves with dignity. Let’s not look down on the current circumstances. To man up is to put in the necessary work to change them.

I remember receiving a letter from my seven-year-old nephew and him boasting how I was the man and how cool I was. His intent may have been to lift me up and honor his uncle, but it hurt me to read his letter. I was aware of the role I played in shaping his wrong way of thinking. No longer will I play the role of a boy and influence our youth into thinking irrational thoughts and actions and characteristics such as joining a gang, committing acts of violence and going to prison makes a man. Staðinn, I am manning up.

Before I go, I want to share an earlier post I wrote “A Man”.
