I don’t want you to die like that

“Grandson, what are you doing here?” the slim, tall old man asks as he opens the screen door to his house. Hugging his grandad on the way in, George responds, “Mom and I had a talk and she said I should talk with you about it.” Sitting down the grandfather fights back the shame creeping up his back like a cold chill. If I don’t teach him, they’ll kill him the old man says to himself, steeling his nerves for what he knew was to come. “Your mother tells me you’re upset with the police.” Feeling ashamed, the grandson replies, “I’m not angry. I just feel like I shouldn’t have to act so timid and afraid around the police just cause I’m black.”

“What do you mean son?”

“I shouldn’t have to put my head down and talk in non-aggressive tones and say ‘yes sir’ and ‘no sir’ in order to keep the police from killing me. Nobody else has to.”

“That’s your pride talking. A lot of rebellious guys in the Jim Crow South would say just what you’re saying. Them white folks would string ’em up quicker than they could blink, and we couldn’t do nothing about it. They was protected by the law. Nowadays, they don’t even use a hood to lynch you boys. They in they police uniform. I just don’t want you to die like that.”

“So y’all gone let police kill me?” George asks.

“What could we do? They the police!!” the grandad yells in a mixture of fear for the boy’s life and frustration that he won’t listen. George dropped his head. “Don’t let your pride get the best of you. Just go along with the program and you’ll be fine; just like me.” George noticed the upper portion of his grandfather’s body becoming see-through years ago. The upper two-fifths of his grandfather’s body had disappeared long ago. Now he understood why. Every time his grandfather just gave in, he lost a part of himself. He was only three-fifths a man.
