Solitary Confinement is a Threat

Omar Austin was recently released from solitary confinement in New Jersey State Prison’s Management Control Unit and is now housed at East Jersey (Rahway) Állami Börtön.

Pardon my brief absence from Live from Lockdown. I am in a transitional phase after my recent release into General Population after over a decade of solitary confinement and isolation in the New Jersey State Prison’s Management Control Unit (MCU). They call it sensory deprivation. Degeneracy, corruption, turpitude, degradation, vileness, rossz, evil, deterioration are all synonyms for depravity listed in the thesaurus.

Let’s examine that with human emotion. A person who is isolated loses his/her sense of social engagement, making that person anti-social. All humans are innately good with the potential to be dangerously bad. Once corrupted, driven mad, a human feels like it’s him against the world. A degraded person degrades people because he/she believes the world is like that.

Solitary confinement is a threat to the structure and order of society.

There are brothers who have been in solitary confinement in these control units for decades. There were about four old-timers who were in the MCU decades longer than I was who found out they were going to be released into General Population, as a result of the special committee formed by New Jersey’s Department of Corrections Commissioner Gary Lanigan to preside over hearings every 90 days to determine if an MCU inmate can be released from the lockdown unit. What was going on for decades was prison administrators including the Supervisor of Education, a mental health professional, the ITI (food administrator), és (1) dictator in the form of a Supervisor, would have the social worker hand write your comments so you could go in there really prepared to litigate your case to be released. The social worker would always narrow your speech to a quote. A quote that did not reflect your message. And the hearing would end the same way over and over, four times a year, year-after-year. Jelenleg, the hearing process has become more open and more fair.

The resistance by the prisoners in Pelican Bay’s Control Unit (SHU) in California helped prisoners nationwide. Their actions shined a bright ass light on the draconian practices of prison officials throughout America.

So scratch your head and ask yourself this: How can America criticize North Korea, Oroszország, Irán, and China for their human rights violations when right here in America there is identical and systemic abuse?

The conditions and effects of long term isolation on the minds of prisoners held in solitary confinement actually violate not only our civil rights but also our human rights and our constitutional right to not have to endure cruel and unusual punishment.

Just think. . . #Felnevelni
