Have We Forgotten About Baltimore?

raise-up-Baltimore-prison

Have we forgotten about Baltimore already? Now that the uncivil disobedience has vanished, so have the news networks and journalists. Now that an assessment of the damage is complete and it has been discovered that the lot of devastation has fallen on the backs of Baltimore’s already poor residents, there is no news to be told. Who cares for urban America’s downtrodden citizens immersed in poverty anticipating their demise as a consequence of hunger, homelessness or over-aggressive and insensitive police force. In their words “senseless thugs” were turning back time (return to 1968), behaving as social deviants. The camera crews swarmed and a media frenzy ensued. To where have they disappeared?

Are we as a nation not equally concerned with the socioeconomic circumstances that lead individuals into a state of destruction, even if it is their own, and its relevance to American society at large?

Only a people feeling truly dispossessed could fathom social suicide as an escape; persons who have never held the privilege of considering their house a home. How painful a reality. You smell the smoke, You see the fire. You lack concern for the fuel which ignited the reaction. You miss “the discussion which degenerates into a pitched battle.” I’m still listening carefully from the confines of my prison cell.

BREAKING NEWS: This just in. In the month of March 2015 one black person was killed by police every twenty-one hours. I surmise such a horrendous truth is not as cringe worthy as Baltimore’s black youth acting out in frustration. If not us, then who? What we need are not self-defeating actions but self-love and self-respect. We make evident our self-worth by confronting what is wrong with America by way of raising up consciously, spiritually and emotionally. By fighting fire with fire, we all burn. Let us be wise. Let us be virtuous. Let us extinguish injustice by behaving justly.

If you believe by changing ourselves we can change much of what’s wrong today, please share this. #RaiseUP
