Elää Lockdown: Nothing to Fear

USP-Atwater-federal-prison

Just recently I was told by a reliable source that some people consider the writers on Live from Lockdown to be “scary”. The moment I received those words my mind went to the blind fear that many whites have of blacks. A fear that is largely built on insecurity, ignorance and a lack of compassion for fellow human beings. I am reminded of all of the ways that blacks are being oppressed. Many blacks have been murdered, incarcerated and abused as a result of the fears of others. The fear of one group of people always leads to the destruction of another.

At this very moment the world is working to free itself of some of its blind fears. Among the things being shed is the fear of former prisoners, ex-convicts returning to society. Taking the form of criminal justice reform, the world seeks to free itself of the fear of “criminals”. Prisoners need to speak on their own behalf and many are developing their writing abilities to establish a voice, all in an attempt to intelligently make the world aware of its own flaws. That flaw being the disaster of the American penal system. Live from Lockdown is one of very few platforms for prisoners to make their issues known. Without avenues such as Live from Lockdown most prisoners would never get the chance to be heard. Lacking the media access of those who support the oppressive forces of the prison industrial complex, vangit’ stories are often told by others who profit by doing so. That representation is not usually favorable. Many prison movies or books that discuss prison choose to highlight the negative and pretty much ignore the positive. My concern is that due to the public’s inability to see beyond prisoners’ crimes society will never see us as human. That is what we are though, ihmisen. We feel, we hope, we fear, we worry, we lose, and we win. All the world knows that the present state of America’s prisons is destructive. Platforms like Live from Lockdown should not be feared. They should be applauded. Such platforms help the world to recognize that change is necessary. Most importantly, these platforms help the world to see there is nothing to fear.

I want to leave you with this: Every single person on Earth has both a good and bad side. The lucky never allow their “huono” side to be seen, and the blessed are able to overcome its influences.
