Letter to the Mayor of Newark

Mayor-Newark-City-hallA letter to the Mayor of Newark Ras J. Baraka

Peace to you and yours. I first want to thank you for everything you have done for me in the past. Second, I want to apologize for the rough patch they put you through because of me. I had no idea things were that big and that was my mistake. I did not realize the seriousness of who I was. For that I deeply apologize. Nüüd, it has taken me so long to sit down and write this letter. My peoples, before she passed away, told me to write you but I didn’t want to cause any more problems for you. I now see that people don’t expect change from a man like me and want to use a person’s past against them. I now know who I am and have been making changes in who I surround myself with. I want to give you an update on what I have been doing.

When I left the county jail, I was sent to a United States Penitentiary in Pollock, Louisiana, which is considered one of the worst federal spots in the country. Upon my arrival there were some guys who knew me and what I used to represent. I was done with the gang lifestyle, but a lot of my friends were not. After listening to their advice and not knowing what I was up against, I started hanging around the same dudes I said I was done with. I did this for two reasons. One was because of what I mentioned to you already, and the other was to see if I was truly done. Even a strong guy like me deals with peer-pressure. Change is not as easy as everyone seems to think when you have been doing this all of your life. I knew times were still the same and had gotten worse. Right then and there I knew that was it for me. The young brothers there wanted me to stay on because they were tired of these guys lying to them and trying to stunt them. I had to tell them that I wasn’t really into it any more because the love was fake and my downfall was going to come from one of my own. They didn’t see it, and I had to realize that it wasn’t about them. The crazy part was I knew this but I have this sense of loyalty for things that hurt me. Even I don’t understand it. Niikuinii, after I saw that things weren’t for me, I started to make my way out of there because if you’re not trying to kill anyone or be killed you need not go to spots like that. People have no idea what it’s like to have to look over your back and hope that one of your own people doesn’t start something without you knowing and get you into something that you didn’t even have anything to do with. I knew I had to leave, so I programmed and got up out of there. I was then sent to a lower yard, a medium security facility, and it was there I got to see what the men out there in the world are like now. These men stood on nothing and wouldn’t stand for anything. It was sad to see the age of man dying off like that. It helped me to get ready for what I am to face when I get on the streets. Jälle, my sense of loyalty eclipsed my judgment and I tried to fight this fight from the inside out, and it still turned out not good. I held on and continued to push pass the madness that was in my head. Then my loved one passed and I knew it was time for me to wake the hell up and realize this isn’t what a man does. A man stands on his two feet and does what he needs to do for himself and his family. I was acting like a follower but being accused of being a leader. It was an oxymoron. I checked myself and got it together.

When I got here to Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Memphis, I told these guys I was good and didn’t want to mess with them but my so-called rank has always pushed me to the forefront. After a month of being here I was invited to a meeting of the organizations that seek peace. I wasn’t going to go but my thing was how could I not support peace when I say that’s what I’m pushing? Läksin ja sai näha nende vennad tulevad kokku ja ühendada ilma valitsuse kaasamist ja sunnitud seda tegema,,en,Tean, et see ei kujuta normiks poliitikas,,en,kuid teil on tulnud olla tuntud ei tee asju vanaviisi, sest need viisid ei tööta,,en,Vastus on nende mõistmisel ja mida teeb inimese liituda gang enne kui nad soovivad liituda kooli klubi või osaleda linna programmi,,en,Rõhk büstidel torud,,en,Ärge lükata võimalik lahendus, sest sa ei meeldi kullerid,,en,Pidin talle minu vabandused linnapea Ras Baraka sest ma teadsin, et ta võttis palju soojust,,en,See on väljaspool Real,,en,FREEYOU noormehedki,,en,Naised vajavad Sa Out Here,,en,Btw Free Baby Servamõõt aka Baby G,,en,Reggie,,en. It showed me that most of the guys want peace because it’s time for change. This helped shape my thoughts and let me know that people do want change. They need someone who is willing to risk stepping up.

The gang mentality is made up of anger and pain. To counter those feelings you have to give the youth something to love. Don’t tell them that what they believe in is wrong. That will cause them to block you out. You have to respect what they believe in and give them the chance to make the change on their own because most of them really want to change. Aga jälle, that peer-pressure is very real, and I’m one to tell you it’s something that even the toughest of us go through. My point in telling you this is that it took me a long time to wake up and smell the coffee. I didn’t want you to think your support for me was in vain because it was not. I have made the right changes in my life and now I am standing on them. This is a lesson to the youth out there. The people read The Murder of Killa Reek and thought I had been killed. It was crazy, but in a way I was dead. I was dead on the inside because I was unhappy with my life because it was being held up by me, mina ja mina.

Sir, I speak to you as a man speaks to another man who he respects and wish for the same in return. I want to help fix our streets, and I know my comrades on Otseülekanne Lockdown want to fix our streets. Together we represent some of the most influential men and people in your city and prisons nationwide. I know this does not represent the norm in politics, but you have come to be known for not doing things the old ways because those ways are not working. Continuing to lock people up is not the answer. The answer is in understanding them and what makes a person join a gang before they want to join a school club or participate in a city program. Why can a gang make them kill you over a color, but won’t let them love themselves or their family? These are some of the questions that need to be asked.

I also want to commend you on your campaign and the way you handled yourself under fire. Pressure busts pipes. They have it wrong, and you have the right idea. We have to find ways to reach these kids. Jah, some will listen to cops, some will listen to celebrities and people they look up to, but there are those who will only listen to the street dude who is on the block with them everyday and who has held them down when they needed something and didn’t judge them for being who they are. Those kids need someone to talk to them most, and they are the ones out there raising hell. Every avenue should be open. Don’t reject a possible solution because you don’t like the messengers. Like the Infamous Mike Loc from California said, it’s not about us; it’s about those who want to be like us.

Ameerika Ühendriike. Attorney had one thing right about me. I was trying to straddle the fence. Trying to do good and still run a gang. It doesn’t work like that, and I now know this. My truth is my freedom. With that sir, I want you to know, Mina, along with a bunch of strong brothers from your city and across the country, are here to help and put ourselves at the mercy of the community. If we helped destroy it, why not let us help rebuild it? And if I’m lying or faking for some type of personal gain, then the truth will reveal my lie and I shall be judged accordingly.

Peace to you and yours,

My name is Al-Tariq Gumbs, an ex-gang member who seeks to be a new man in the eyes of my community. Thank you for your time. King Sankofa lives. Killa Reek is dead.

We shall overcome by any means necessary.
