Hope for the Future

I send my condolences to the families of all the victims of police brutality. We must strengthen our rope of hope!

I have been in a dull and bitter emotional state for sometime now. Watching the news makes me feel some type of way. It’s very painful to see the lack of justice and accountability in today’s world. Not only are we as people murdered by government officials, but we as people are harassed. It seems that color supersedes all. There seems to be never-ending roadblocks to our forward progress. Why are the so-called leaders of the black community i.e. Al Sharpton still using the methods that have rung on deaf ears for years? Why are police officers that have killed innocent, unarmed people still allowed to patrol the streets and be compensated. Why does it take a person 20-25 years to overturn a case that was tried under false pretense? Why is Michael Jordan whose shoes have led to many murders where I’m from (Washington D.C.) speaking out now when he has been silent for years? Why is it that the roles of men and women have shifted, leaving women stronger than men?

I no longer read Blueprint for Black Power by Amos Wilson, The Last Man Standing, Soul on Ice by Eldridge Cleaver, o Huey: Spirit of the Panther. Those individuals were great minds who stood for the people in their times. Where are the fearless leaders of our time? It’s not about violent revolution. Violence does not work at all. Violence is an epidemic, a tool for economic and social depreciation that is used against us. It’s about education and the qualities of our leaders.

We need true leadership to serve and voice the concerns of the people. We need more than outcry. We need leaders who can provide hope and instill courage. We need integrity and sound, selfless judgement. We do not need rhetoric and propaganda. We need truth to be the muscle of our leadership and determination its legs. No matter what transpires we need leadership that an earthquake cannot shake from its stance for the people. Love must be the eyes of leadership. Our leaders must love all. Today’s vision for leadership must be backed by love. Today’s leaders must love who they lead and where they are leading them to. Peace must be the hand of leadership so whoever leadership embraces, they must be assured all is well. Knowledge and wisdom must be the swords of leadership used to strike ignorance at any moment. The people must support true, selfless and servant leaders because we do reflect an image of what we dream of.

Sí, education is most important. But we must realize that it’s not about history, it’s about the future. We are so lost in the past that the future continues to slip away, adding to our failures. Education must be focused on what is relevant today and what can make a better future. Sí, history does repeat itself. And since we know this already, don’t you think it’s time we do something different.
