  • HBCUs: Are Young African Americans Disrespecting History?

There have been shootings at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) including a fatality at Texas Southern University and other shootings at Bethune-Cookman University, Hampton University, North Carolina Central University, Tennessee State University, Winston Salem State University. Is it a coincidence or a trend? I think the youth today are more apt to pull a gun than take an ass kicking. They think you are not a man if you lose a fight. They don’t understand you... READ MORE

  • Gun Control or Mental Health?

Once again a massacre has taken place at one of our higher learning institutions. This time it was in Oregon. President Obama said, “it’s becoming routine,” in his remarks that were aired on news reports after the shooting. But still in all, there is no resolve. Gun control is still in constant debate, but my opinion is gun control is not the answer. Taking away our fundamental right to bear arms is not the solution to the actual problem. Since 2012 and the tragic Sandy Hook... READ MORE

  • Is It Mental or Criminal?

Our country is suffering from an identity crisis? Our elected officials have a problem identifying who is mentally ill and who is actually criminal.  Why is that when a white person commits a horrific crime, such as the Sandy Hook school shooting or the Aurora movie theater massacre, the public attributes these crimes to mental illness? And when a black or Hispanic does something far less destructive, they are instantly tagged a criminal.  Are these so-called mentally ill individuals not... READ MORE

  • An Incarcerated Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Waste

Time and time again I sit and watch healthy minds go to waste. I have several questions that our incarcerated youth refuse to answer. For instance, why is that our incarcerated youth can memorize a whole rap song or know every shoe that Michael Jordan came out with, but refuse to get their GED or go to the law library and fight their cases? They are not even aware of the unjust sentences handed out as a result of federal law or even what it took to get these laws passed and how they can be... READ MORE

  • A Very Precious and Delicate Jewel

My thought of the week is on how we as men, not only as African American men, but men in general, neglect and have lost respect for a very precious and delicate jewel- And that is our women, the queens of God’s green earth. We have allowed ourselves to adopt the silly notion that we don’t need them. And when they’re gone, we wish that they never left. How could we actually believe that the actual creature that’s responsible for our actual existence is nothing but a mere... READ MORE

  • Gun Violence

The day of the tragic deaths of those twenty children opened my eyes to something: how misguided we as a community are. Now before I begin to elaborate on what happened in Newtown, Connecticut, let me express without uncertainty, it was horrific and my heart goes out to all the families who lost loved ones. Why is that there are tragedies from gun violence in our urban communities on a weekly basis that don’t get national attention? For instance, in Chicago there are twenty to forty... READ MORE

  • G-Tone

My name is Anthony Marcellus Williams. My middle name was given to me by my father. Marcellus was a general in Julius Caesar’s army. My father gave me that name because I was born to be a leader. I’m a member of the Black P. Stone Blood organization. I’ve been in and out of jail a third of my life and indecisive for half of my life about what I really want out of life. At this point and time in my life I’m incarcerated physically but, I’m more free mentally and... READ MORE
