America’s Mansions

In a tiny bathroom I sit, lay and pray housed with another man. I feel and sense his many emotions, as he does mine. All in all, it’s not a bad thing. We both have the power to energize one another and assist each other with thinking objectively. With twenty-three hours, even twenty-four on multiple occasions, we share various reflections. Yes, we do!

We reminisce about all we had, everything we did, so on and so forth. The usual jail house thing! Then, a booming voice appears from out of nowhere commanding us to stand up. Flashlights get shone on us. The cling of metal on metal is a signal that it’s time to eat. How frustrating it is for me, even after fourteen years in prisons across the United States, to have every facet of my life controlled; reliant on people who hate me, or care less about me, for everything.

By no means was I a famous notorious criminal. But I had half a penny to spend and a few beautiful women at my whim. As I peer deeply into my surroundings, I am utterly disgusted by the criminal mentality, which reigns supreme. It actively thrives, heavily, on having no self-worth. Truly, in present day, anything goes on in the modern criminal element. The only loyalty that the average criminal has it to himself. Much of what I experience is very difficult; knowing what was, in stark comparison to what is now.

Once upon a time it was fun, maybe even easy to seek and/or live that life. Nope, I didn’t give a lot of thought to protecting my manhood or fighting to maintain my existence on the level I do now.

In prison, your problem could be in the cell with you, across the hall or next door. You could see him or them in the dining room or recreation yard, instead of across town.

So, I was sentenced to letters followed by a number. Indeed, God-Willing, I will be who I know to be- A Man. But there’s no question I wish I could rewrite my story. There’s plenty of room for you too in one of the many mansions in America.

I read this as I do many of Tewhan writings & reflect on my own son as he is incarcerated .Al-nisa its sad to say I been where you are and so these men parents . We as parents do all we can to protect our children from the evils of the streets but the only real protection is pray. Our African American families hve struggled for many years. I read this and sadness invades my soul because this is the reality for many of our youth will face one day . A hard head makes a soft butt so very true.We as African Americans were not bless with silver spoons ,yet we were blessed to struggle ,believe ,survival ,and achieve. I respect you MArco and Tewhan if no one else respects you. Only a real man would admit his faults and try to help others not to face the same demise.May Allah bless u both ,Brother maRCo AS SALAMU ALAIKUM .always remember Allah is n control man has none never will………pray, read Quran and sabr

Minister Marco, may the Almighty continue to give you the dreesis of your heart as you labor in the vineyard. The harvest truly is ripe but the laborers are few, thanks for being a part of this awesome season of reaping souls for the Kingdom. God bless you all. We enjoyed the praise and worship time during the last service.Yours in Christ,Rev. Etta Cooper Williams
